The Japanese Terrier is generally a healthy breed, but there are some known health concerns. JTCA strongly encourages breeders to health test dogs in their program to gather data on the breed and to make owners and other breeders aware of issues so the breed community can work together to eliminate or limit preventable conditions.
Health concerns by owner report include minor to moderate food / environmental allergies, umbilical hernia, and cataracts.
Luxating patella and Legg Calve Perthes Disease are also concerns in small breed dogs in general.
